Obama Refuses To Apologize For Polish Death Camp Gaffe

Suggesting a shrug of the shoulders and an indication millions of Poles should just “get over it”, the Obama White House makes light of President Barack Obama’s glaring gaffe against Poland during a Medal of Freedom presentation this past week.

(President Obama poking the chest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.  It should be noted that the former Israeli Special Forces member Netanyahu could likely and quite effectively incapacitate Barack Obama in seconds…)

It is interesting to note that while Barack Obama has repeatedly been quick to apologize to the world for America, he rarely if ever is willing to apologize to others for himself.  Such is the case yet again when the president incorrectly used the term “Polish death camps” when referencing Nazi death camps located inside Poland during WWII – a distinction particularly important to Poles who lost many many lives during those horrific years of war.

EXCERPT:

“We regret the misstatement, but that is what it was,” said Obama spokesman Jay Carney, reiterating that the president “misspoke” during a ceremony awarding the highest US civilian honor to late Holocaust hero Jan Karski.

…Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Obama’s words had hurt all Poles and he expected more from Washington than just regret.

“I am convinced that our American friends can today allow themselves a stronger reaction than a simple expression of regret from the White House spokesman — a reaction more inclined to eliminate once and for all these kinds of errors,” Tusk told reporters in Warsaw.

“Today, this is a problem for the reputation of the United States,” the prime minister said.   LINK

Prime Minister Tusk is correct – President Obama should have quickly made a personal apology to Poland, and yet, the dismissive attitude by this president to America’s long standing allies is nothing new and has been on display before with others such as Israel and Great Britain.  Do not forget the reports that had former French President Nicolas  Sarkozy declaring Barack Obama “insane” – a dispute that apparently arose out of Obama’s dismissive attitude toward Sarkozy’s concerns over the growing threat of Muslim dominance in Western Europe.  Just as he is now doing with Poland, Barack Obama’s attitude toward that threat was also for France and other nations to simply “get over it”.   LINK

An Apology to former President Bill Clinton for That PBS Documentary

Apologies are in order, and since PBS and the producers of the four-hour Clinton documentary are not likely to do the right thing, I’ll weigh in instead.

I have standing to do this, since I’m a loyal PBS viewer, regular contributor and, much of the time, uncompromising cheer leader for the network.

But it’s hard to cheer lead for a Clinton documentary that begins with what feels like an endless rehash of the Monica Lewinsky episode, and whose unifying thread is opportunity lost.

If you go to the PBS web site promoting home copies of the program, it reads like this:

“From draft-dodging to the Dayton Accords, from Monica Lewinsky to a balanced budget, the presidency of William Jefferson Clinton veered between sordid scandal and grand achievement. In Clinton, the latest installment in the critically acclaimed series of presidential biographies, AMERICAN EXPERIENCE explores the fascinating story of an American president who rose from a broken childhood in Arkansas to become one of the most successful politicians in modern American history–and one of the most complex and conflicted characters to ever stride across the public stage.”

I doubt that anyone who actually sits through all four hours of Clinton gets a message that he was “one of the most successful politicians in modern American history.” His fault lines, however, are explored in minute detail—from the women he chased during his very first campaign to the he’s-no-LBJ verdict pronounced against him in dealing with Congress.

And what about those “grand achievements?” If you happened to slip into the bathroom for a few minutes at the wrong time you missed the fleeting scenes about balancing the budget and presiding over the most prolonged economic expansion in peace time American history. There was a short segment about his orchestration of an end to the Balkan war, a job he took on at great political risk when European leaders refused to sign up for it. Clinton’s green light of an attempt to kill bin Laden and the Al Qaeda leadership was noted, but in the context of a suspected impeachment distraction.

More than 22 million jobs were created during the Clinton presidency. Home ownership was at the highest level ever, (without the phony mortgages that came during the Bush years). The crime rate dropped to the lowest level in 26 years. The Brady gun law was enacted. Family leave time became a reality.

Clinton made extraordinary efforts in the cause of racial harmony. (They called him “the first black president”). Thousands of Russian nuclear warheads were deactivated, and many others lying loose after the Soviet Union’s collapse were located and disarmed.

Unless I was checking email on my smartphone at the time, I saw or heard none of that.

But from beginning to end, you could have dropped into the PBS documentary nearly anywhere along its four hour time line and been told of sex, investigations, failures to live up to promise, and pseudo analysis of why Clinton behaved as he did. The producers didn’t discuss bed-wetting, but clearly they were obsessed with what made Clinton tick when he should have tocked.

Whitewater, as we now know, was a phony smokescreen Republicans used to justify what amounted to a full time, resident inquisitor who spent five years searching for anything that could tear down the Clintons. With what amounted to an unlimited checkbook of public money, subpoena power, a friendly Congress and about all the assets any prosecutor dreams of having, Kenneth Starr found nothing to hang on the President except Monica Lewinsky’s blue dress.

Bill Clinton was no saint. Neither were Newt Gingrich or Tom DeLay or so many others hounding Clinton all those years. During the impeachment process, Rep. Henry Hyde, who took on the role of chief U.S. House prosecutor, had to admit to an extra marital affair of his own.

Neither was Bill Clinton an LBJ. So what? Can you think of anyone, Republican or Democrat, who has duplicated LBJ’s talent for maneuvering through the legislative thicket to achieve success on difficult issues? Clinton made rookie errors in his early White House years. So did Reagan. So has Obama.

To be successful, television needs viewers. And since TV is pictures, reliving scenes of a sex scandal is bound to attract and hold more eyeballs than the intricacies of balancing a budget. The Lewinsky case and impeachment did consume an inordinate amount of public oxygen for years, along with various other failed Republican efforts to bring down President Clinton. Vince Foster, the White House travel office, missing files—thinking back it all seems like a bad dream. And all so pointless and historically insignificant.

Republican attempts to criminalize the President were scandalous, and the American public knew it. He left the presidency with the highest approval rating of any president since World War II. By the time the U.S. Senate voted down impeachment the public was sick to death of the entire episode. The largest grass roots organization of the past decade, Move On, was created by those begging political leaders to do that—-move on.

The PBS documentary billed itself as one of the first post-Clinton White House attempts to put those years in context. Why then, spend so much air time with a known self-aggrandizing sleezeball like Dick Morris and not a single bona fide historian? 

WAS DORIS KERNS GOODWIN asleep in the powder room?

Where were the first person interviews with members of Congress? Other than Robert Reich, who provided some excellent perspective, and Robert Rubin, Clinton’s treasury secretary, why no cabinet members? Clinton was portrayed generally as a failure in the foreign policy arena. Really? Is that how his foreign leader contemporaries viewed him? Did anyone ask Blair, Chirac or Putin?

If this attempt at defining the Clinton years were on cable TV I wouldn’t be surprised that sex and scandal were the highlight reels. But PBS?

PBS probably won’t apologize for this, Mr. President. But PBS is also the millions of us who contribute to keep it on the air. I can’t speak for anyone else, but from one loyal PBS member, I’m sorry. You deserved much better.

(Yes, millions of US but remember just one, George Soros contributed millions ensuring the highlights of the Clinton legacy would be short shrifted painting  Obama, the Renaissance Man of the 21st Century.)

I said to him hello Mr. President me and my friends want to know if Hillary will run, and I mean in 2012 and not 2016. He paused for a sec. And said she keeps saying no but if she gets enough encouragement maybe she will change her mind.

Please, Hillary, Run!

On this blog there is a long archive which, at some point in August, I began entitling “Media Reads on a Hillary Run.” The comment threads on those posts are chock-full of comments from HRC’s supporters who wish she would run again for POTUS and not wait until 2016 to do so. Many of us are dissatisfied to the point of infinite frustration with the way Barack Obama has squandered his golden opportunity to bring real change as he promised. Most of us did not vote for him and did vote for HRC.

The list of reasons is long, but encapsulated comprises:

1. The Leadership Deficit:

Obama’s inability to break the shell of his West Wing office and reach out to the opposition in a human and social fashion. He would have been far more effective with the GOP had he approached them as human beings, had a few people, Boehner, McConnell over for lunch, and given Lisa Murkowski a congratulatory call for her amazing write-in victory, than he proved to be by having them over for secret meetings where he lectured and adopted the stance of “the adult in the room.”

2. The Stalled Car:

For a long period last year, he and his speech writers really liked that car metaphor, but the truth was that the car was stalled. It stalled over the Gulf oil spill and the jobs the government could have generated with a CCC type effort to clean up the gulf. In fact, from day one, jobs should have been a priority but were put on a back burner for a badly flawed and wanting health care plan wherein he withdrew the single payer option.

3. The Phenomenal Collapsing President:

Every time the Republicans stood shoulder to shoulder, Obama simply laid down on the tracks and gave the GOP what they wanted (or he thought they wanted) before they even demanded it. He was, according to John Conyers, the one who offered up the social safety nets on a silver platter before they even brought up that subject during last August’s budget crisis. The GOP candidates are correct. Obama is an appeaser. Not in foreign policy. He appeases them on domestic issues without even being asked. We have seen almost three years of this!

4. The Hesitation Blues:

How long must we wait? Obama left for an August vacay saying he would introduce a jobs bill after he got back .. after Labor Day. Americans who are out of work could not afford that wait. They do not have vacations, and, while Labor Day is a holiday for those of us who have jobs, they have no holidays. It is simply another day when they cannot look for a job. In the foreign policy arena, he waited longer than necessary to establish the No Fly Zone in Libya, and we do know that HRC rounded up a posse to change his mind.So this evening I have no media articles to prompt this post. Instead I have a short conversation between my friend Rumana and President Clinton this afternoon at a book signing in Chappaqua. Here is Rumana’s synopsis:

The 42nd President of the United States of America, Bill Clinton, celebrates his birthday today. The Big Dawg is now 65. Happy birthday, Bubba!

William Jefferson Clinton, the pride of Hope, Ark., remains the only Democrat to win two full White House terms since Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

He also presided over the largest peacetime economic expansion in U.S. history, and left office extremely popular despite being impeached.

Hey, no one’s perfect, right?

His wife, Hillary Clinton, is currently U.S. Secretary of State. Their daughter, Chelsea, married Marc Mezvinsky last summer in New York State.

In a political flip-flop of Mitt Romney-esque proportions, Bill Clinton is marking his 65th birthday by going vegan. Seriously. No more burgers!

What a difference a quadruple bypass makes. “I like the vegetables, the fruits, the beans, the stuff I eat now,” the ex-President tells CNN.

After experiencing heart problems leading up to the 2004 surgery, Clinton has now lost 20 lbs.: “I feel good, and I have so much more energy.”

Glad to hear. Have a veggie burger on us tonight, BC!

PRISTINA, Nov. 1, 2009 (Reuters) — Kosovo’s Albanian majority unveiled a statue of former U.S. president Bill Clinton on Sunday to thank him for saving them by stopping a wave of ethnic cleansing by Serbia.

 

As the U.S. President in 1999, Clinton launched NATO air strikes to halt the killing of ethnic Albanians by Serbian troops.

Clinton’s speech was interrupted several times by Kosovo Albanians wildly cheering his name and U.S.A., and waving U.S., Albanian and Kosovo flags.

“I am profoundly grateful that I had a chance to be a part of ending the horrible things that were happening to you 10 years ago giving you a chance to build a better future for yourself,” Clinton told the crowd.

The crowd chanted Clinton’s name when the former president started shaking hands with people along a boulevard named after him.

“I never expected … anywhere someone will make such a big statue of me,” Clinton said after his 3-meter (10 foot) statue was unveiled.

He urged Kosovars to build a multi-ethnic country with the minority Serbs and other minorities and said the United States would always help Kosovo’s people.

“You have to build something good and we should help,” he added.

Kosovo declared independence from Serbia last year and was recognized by the United States and major European Union powers — a total of 62 countries worldwide but not by its former ruler Serbia, Russia and China.

Grateful Kosovo Albanians also named a central street in central Pristina after former U.S. president George W. Bush.

Kosovo Albanians regard Clinton, former British prime minister Tony Blair and Clinton’s state secretary Madeleine Albright as their saviors and have named their babies after them.

Ismail Neziri had travelled 60 km (37 miles) to see the president again after they met in a refugee camp in Macedonia where Neziri’s family had fled to escape the forces of late Serb strongman Slobodan Milosevic.

Around 10,000 Albanians were killed as Serb forces moved to wipe out an ethnic Albanian guerrilla force and 800,000 were expelled to neighboring Macedonia, Albania and Montenegro.

“I was only eight years in a refugee camp in Macedonia when Clinton took me in his hands and today he is the same big and young man,” said Neziri, 18, holding a U.S. flag.

“In 1996 everybody was speaking that Clinton is a good man and he will help us, and then my father named me after him,” said 13-year-old Klinton Krasniqi.

Thousands of ethnic Albanians have braved the cold in Kosovo’s capital Pristina to welcome former president Bill Clinton at the unveiling of a statue of himself on a key boulevard that also bears his name.

Clinton is celebrated as a hero by Kosovo’s ethnic Albanian majority for launching NATO’s bombing campaign against Yugoslavia in 1999 that stopped the brutal Serb forces’ crackdown on independence-seeking ethnic Albanians.

This is his first visit to Kosovo since it declared independence from Serbia last year.

Many waved American, Albanian and Kosovo flags and chanted “USA!” as the former president climbed on top of a podium with his poster in the background reading “Kosovo honours a hero.”

Some peeked out of balconies and leaned on window sills to get a better view of Clinton from their apartment blocks.

To thunderous applause Clinton waved to the crowd as the red cover was pulled off from the 3.5 metre statue.

The statue is placed on top of a white-tiled base, in the middle of a tiny square, surrounded by communist-era buildings.

“I never expected that anywhere, someone would make such a big statue of me,” Clinton said of the gold-sprayed statue weighing nearly a ton.

He also addressed Kosovo’s 120-seat assembly, encouraging them to forgive and move on from the violence of the past.

The statue portrays Clinton with his left arm raised and holding a portfolio bearing his name and the date when NATO started bombing Yugoslavia, on March 24, 1999.

An estimated 10,000 ethnic Albanians were killed during the Kosovo crackdown and about 800,000 were forced out of their homes. They returned home after NATO-led peacekeepers moved in following 78 days of bombing.

Leta Krasniqi, an ethnic Albanian, said the statue was the best way to express the ethnic Albanians’ gratitude for Clinton’s role in making Kosovo a state.

“This is a big day,” Krasniqi, 25 said. “I live nearby and I’m really excited that I will be able to see the statue of such a big friend of ours every day.”

Clinton last visited Kosovo in 2003 when he received an honorary university degree. His first visit was in 1999 – months after some 6,000 US troops were deployed in the NATO-led peacekeeping mission here.

Some 1,000 American soldiers are still based in Kosovo as part of NATO’s 14,000-strong peacekeeping force.

Who would be doing better? Hillary or Baby Boy Barack?

A Fox News/Opinion Dynamics telephone survey of 900 registered American voters conducted Sept. 29 and 30 found that 27 percent think Hillary Clinton would have been doing a better job than Barack Obama had she won last year’s presidential election. On the other hand, 28 percent said she would be doing worse.

The margin of error is 3 percentage points, so that’s probably not a statistically significant difference. Overall, it appears people, regardless of their political affiliation, are more or less divided on who would be a better president, though Republicans skew a bit toward Clinton and Democrats a bit toward Obama.

If this poll is even half accurate, then the so called Democrats are just plain jealous of Hillary’s success. If 27% say that she would do worse than Obama as president, then I have to seriously question their judgment.

Independents are right down the middle, which I pretty much expected. The Republicans surprised me however. 34% said that she would do a better job than Obama would. That’s showing some surprising strength for a party that hounded her and her husband for eight years. Then again, the Republicans hope the Democrats keep doing what they are doing and they will happily remove the Democrats from their seats in November. Bwaaaahaha!

The UPS man said he wished everyone were as excited to see him at their door as I was when he put that Teddy Kennedy memoir, “True Compass,” in my hands last week. But it’s just as well that I wasn’t home when he dropped off Taylor Branch’s forthcoming “The Clinton Tapes: Wrestling History With the President.” Because having been assigned to write about such historical figures as Paula Jones, Monica Lewinsky and Linda Tripp for The New York Times, my initial reaction to Clinton’s gazillion hours of yakking to Branch was I’ve seen that movie, thanks — and some of it was tedious the first time. I don’t care what a person does or says in their PERSONAL LIFE, period………………………….as long as they do a good work at their job. We all had a little change jiggling in our pockets those 8 yrs. Clinton was in office. God only knows how hard that man worked with that Republican Congress, even with Newt and K. Starr judging and prosecuting him. ($66 million spent doing so) Such a waste of time and money (our money).

President Clinton did try to KILL BIN LADEN, and in transition of the Presidency, he warned W several times about Bin Laden. Plus, he left W a $180 billion surplus, but it was gone with those stupid checks W mailed out to us, trying to win some popularity from the American people which was so low. And also W thought, as President it would be easy, until 9/11 he had planned on playing golf thru his Presidency.

But, back to President Clinton: Except for that One thing with President Clinton he was and still is one of the most brilliant President’s we’ve ever had. And except for that One thing, his Presidency was one of the most successful. Even with that One thing, he still may go down in history as one of the greatest Presidents. And President Obama needs to let go of his ego and use President Clinton more. Did you folks know, when Bill Clinton left office, his popularity rate, I think was still at 65%?

The American people could have cared less about that One thing. And when the extreme right wingers judge, they need to remember ALL THE SCANDALS THAT WENT ON IN THEIR PARTY UNDER THE CHENEY/ROVE/BUSH administration.

Even though, I agree Al Gore was a bore, I think 9/11 might have Not happened if a Democrat had won [oh wait they did], because Clinton and Gore had a much better relationship with the Muslim world than did the Bush family. Herbert, 41, left troops in Mecca, Saudi Arabia after Desert Storm, of course for the base and to watch over Kuwait, but with that said/written it infuriated the Muslims. Remember, 15 of the 19 hijackers were from Saudi. And by the way, how come the Saudi government was never held responsible for that? I agree with pretty much everything u wrote, except about Gore, he isn’t given enough credit for all he has done around the world and here in the good ole’ USA. If it had not been for Al Gore, America and the rest of the world would still be apathetic about Global Warmning.

I googled George H.W. Bush and his ties (Carlyle Group) with the Saudi government, interesting to say the least. We’ll never know the truth about all the corruption under the G.W. Bush Administration, will we? SAD

Artti – I’m not picking on you; just responding to your post. Any criticism here is directed at ALL OF US! Given the perspective and tone in our media, can we realistically expect any “honest, intelligent, and caring” person to run for public office? Would such a person subject their own family to such an abuse?

The politician lives his/her life in a fishbowl. Their every move and decision is scrutinized, second-guessed, and criticized. In a diverse society, no decision is going to please everyone. It is understood that the media has to report the dissenting opinions, but, the media needs to provide comprehensive coverage. Instead, the media sensationalizes the situations by overemphasizing the extreme positions. If a typical reporter interviewed 10 people (one left-wing extremist, one right-wing extremist, and the balance are centrists), 80% of the reporter’s article would cover what the two extremists had to say. The media overemphasizes the discord and disharmony in our society. People are asking “What happened to civility?” Well, the media drove it out by ignoring it. Like Obama said, the media encourages rudeness!!

This perverted perspective extends o the politician’s personal life. The media dissects their background and their family looking for any “dirt” they can find. The media, especially the paparazzi, salivate at the thought of catching a politician/celebrity making a mistake or doing something embarrassing.

Why do we find it necessary to tear our politicians apart? Are we so jealous, insignificant, and insecure, that we can not stand the thought of someone being revered or honored more than ourselves?

For those who don’t know,  (the author of this article)  Melinda Henneberger is a long time Clinton hater. So whatever she says about anything Clinton, take it with a grain of salt. Just do a Google search with her name and Clinton, it’s all old music to my ears. This article continues the pattern.
